Why inverter replacement matters.

A dead inverter means zero solar output and no grid export revenue. Without professional diagnosis, you might replace the wrong component or buy an incompatible unit, wasting time and money. A fast, accredited replacement restores your system and keeps you protected by warranty.

Choosing an unaccredited contractor risks electrical safety, voids manufacturer support and may breach your state's electrical regulations. A licensed, SAA accredited electrician ensures the job meets safety standards, includes proper testing and isolation, and gives you audit-proof documentation.

  5. 05

    Inverter Monitoring & Troubleshooting

Remote and on-site diagnostics to confirm inverter failure versus a simple error. May avoid unnecessary replacement. Includes written fault report and repair recommendation.

How inverter replacement works: the step-by-step process.

Step 1 — Assessment. Your installer visits and inspects the failed inverter, checks panel output, tests electrical isolation and reviews your system design. They photograph the site, note roof access, cable runs and any upgrades needed (such as new switchboard connections for a hybrid). This takes 30–60 minutes.

Step 2 — Written Quote. You receive an itemised quote that lists the inverter model and warranty, labour rate and hours, electrical work, testing, travel, and GST. A good quote also outlines site risks (e.g. roof height, cable rerouting) and the timeline. No work starts without your signed approval.

Step 3 — Supply & Installation. On the agreed date, the electrician isolates your system safely, removes the old inverter, installs and wires the new unit, and connects it to your switchboard or hybrid battery controller. All cables are checked for damage and replaced if needed.

Step 4 — Testing & Handover. The installer runs a full safety test (earth leakage, voltage output, grid synchronisation), prints test reports, and shows you how to monitor the new inverter via an app or web portal. You receive the warranty certificate, test report and proof of work.

What affects inverter replacement cost in your area.

Inverter size and type: A 5 kW string inverter ($1,500–$2,000) costs less than a 10 kW hybrid inverter ($3,000–$4,200). Microinverters are priced per unit and scale with the panel count. Premium brands (Fronius, SMA, Tesla Powerwall) carry higher upfront cost but longer warranty and better resale value.

Site access and height: A replacement on a single-storey home with easy roof access costs less labour than a multi-storey building, steep pitch or obstructed installation. Coastal suburbs with salt-laden air may require corrosion-resistant cabling, adding materials cost.

Electrical upgrades: If your switchboard is full or outdated, adding a sub-board or isolator may be required by your state regulator. This adds $400–$1,200. If moving to a hybrid, you may need new conduit, isolators and DC safety switches.

Warranty and support: Accredited installers often include on-site commissioning, monitoring setup and 2–5 years workmanship warranty. Budget $200–$500 for extended support or remote monitoring add-ons.

Urgency and distance: If you need same-day or weekend work, labour rates may increase by 20–40%. Installers outside your postcode may charge travel costs; confirm before booking.

Brand availability: Some inverters require lead time (2–4 weeks). If you need a quick swap, the installer may fit an equivalent in stock, which may cost more or less depending on current pricing.

  • Major switchboard replacement or electrical code upgrade beyond the inverter connection
  • Ongoing monitoring or extended remote support (optional add-on)
  • Removal and disposal of the old inverter (may incur a separate e-waste recycling fee)

Do not attempt to replace an inverter yourself. High-voltage DC lines and grid-connected AC circuits pose serious electrical and fire risk. Always hire a licensed electrician with SAA accreditation. Confirm current accreditation requirements with your state regulator before work begins.

Questions to ask every installer

  1. 1Is the electrician SAA accredited and licensed in my state? Ask to see current accreditation and licence before booking.
  2. 2Will you provide a written, itemised quote? Avoid anyone who quotes verbally or over the phone without a site visit.
  3. 3What is included in the price? Confirm equipment, labour, testing, travel and warranty are all listed separately.
  4. 4How long is the workmanship warranty, and what does it cover? Check whether it includes labour and parts, and how to claim.
  5. 5Can you manage my warranty claim if the inverter is still under manufacturer cover? Ask about their process and timeline.

Questions

Common questions

Still have questions? Ask us or call 0485868633.

What is an inverter and why does it fail?
An inverter converts direct current (DC) from your solar panels into alternating current (AC) for home use. Inverters typically last 10–15 years but fail due to power surges, extreme heat, humidity in coastal suburbs, component wear, or manufacturing defects. A faulty inverter stops your system exporting to the grid and may trigger safety warnings on your monitoring app.
How much does a solar inverter replacement cost in Australia?
Inverter replacement typically costs $1,500–$4,200 per unit, depending on inverter size, brand, warranty, installation complexity and your location. A basic string inverter swap on a single-storey home costs less than a hybrid inverter upgrade or a multi-storey install. Get a written, itemised quote before work begins; it should list equipment, labour, testing and any electrical upgrades needed.
Do I need an SAA accredited electrician?
Yes. Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation is mandatory for anyone installing or replacing solar equipment in Australia. Your electrician must hold a current SAA accreditation and be a licensed electrical contractor in your state. Always ask to see accreditation proof and a current electrical licence before work starts; confirm current requirements with your state regulator.
Will I get an STC rebate for inverter replacement?
Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) apply only to new solar installations, not replacements or repairs. If you are upgrading to a larger system (adding panels or a hybrid battery), you may create new STCs; the Clean Energy Regulator sets the number and value. Confirm eligibility with your installer using the SRES calculator or contact the CER directly.
Can I use the Cheaper Home Batteries rebate for a hybrid inverter?
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program (from 1 July 2025) subsidises battery systems paired with hybrid inverters. The 2026 rate is approximately $252/kWh for the first 14 kWh, $151/kWh from 14–28 kWh, and $38/kWh from 28–50 kWh. A hybrid inverter alone is not subsidised; the discount applies to the battery storage. Confirm current amounts and eligibility with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water or your state energy agency.
How long does an inverter replacement take?
A straightforward string inverter swap on an accessible site takes 4–8 hours, including safety disconnection, testing and handover. Hybrid upgrades, multi-level roofs, electrical upgrades or complex setups may add 1–2 days. Your installer should confirm the timeline in the written quote and discuss any access or scheduling constraints.
What warranty do I get on a new inverter?
Most inverters come with a manufacturer's warranty of 5–10 years; premium brands and hybrid inverters often offer 10 years as standard. The installer provides a separate workmanship warranty (usually 2–5 years). Your written contract should list both warranties, cover conditions and claim procedures. Keep your invoice, test reports and warranty certificates for future reference.
What if my replacement is a warranty claim?
If your inverter is under manufacturer warranty and has failed due to a defect, the installer may coordinate a warranty swap at reduced or no labour cost. You will need your original invoice and proof of installation date. Accredited installers know the claim process for major brands (Fronius, SMA, Tesla, LG, SoFar) and can manage the paperwork. Confirm coverage before work begins.
